How to Find an NHS Dentist in Doncaster

Finding a Practice

Visit NHS.uk and use the dental search tool, filtering by “Accepting new NHS patients”. Call practices directly to confirm availability. If no local practice is accepting NHS patients, contact NHS South Yorkshire ICB who commission dental services for the area.

Unlike GP registration, you don’t formally register with a dentist — you simply need to find one willing to see you as an NHS patient when you need treatment. It’s worth calling practices regularly as capacity can change.

If you need emergency dental care and cannot access your own dentist, call NHS 111 for an emergency dental referral.

NHS Dental Charge Exemptions

You pay nothing for NHS dental treatment if you are: under 18 (or under 19 in full-time education), pregnant or had a baby in the last 12 months, receiving certain benefits including Universal Credit or Income Support, or hold a valid HC2 (low income) certificate.

Emergency Dental Care

For severe dental pain when you can’t see your dentist, call NHS 111 who can direct you to an emergency dental service. Do not go to A&E for dental pain unless swelling is affecting your breathing or swallowing.

Your Rights

Your Rights as an NHS Dental Patient

Right to NHS Treatment

Dentists with NHS contracts must provide NHS treatment. You should never be pushed toward private treatment without being given the NHS option first. Always ask if treatment is available on the NHS.

Right to a Treatment Plan

Before treatment, your dentist must provide a written plan listing all proposed NHS and private treatment and their costs. You have the right to accept or decline any part of it.

Right to Make a Complaint

If you’re overcharged or unhappy with your NHS dental care, you can complain to the practice or to NHS England. Contact Healthwatch Doncaster if you need impartial support making a complaint.
